• The Railfreight Users Group has decided not to pursue compensation from Railfreight Distribution for the losses its members incurred following the decision to shut Speedlink (CM 20 Dec-2 Jan).
However, it says individual members will continue to press for payment to cover losses and investment in road transport. Only one company, timber supplier Kronospan of North Wales, is taking Railfreight Distribution to court.
RUG says its decision not to press for compensation was made to prevent alienating Railfreight. Instead it wants Railfreight to agree to let its members use track free of charge. "We are bending over backwards to be constructive," says RUG, "but the only concession Railfreight has made is the waiving of rental on land formerly leased from Speedlink."
