At the time of going to press more 24-hour strikes appeared likely. A meeting between Cliff Twort, passenger services national secretary of the TGWU, and Sir Keith Bright, London Regional Transport's chairman, was scheduled for this Wednesday. The union has warned of further strikes unless there is a postponement of the tendering process in London.
The union is unhappy that its members are being asked to accept wage cuts and increased working hours in order to enable London Buses to tender competitively for routes it currently operates.
Since July 1985. 79 bus routes in London which were originally operated by London Buses have been put out to tender. London Buses has won only 34 of these routes, and now the Capital Transport Campaign claims that LRT is planning to re-tender 12 of the 34 routes won by London Buses.
