ANY investment in electrification of Britain's railways should be in addition to, and not instead of, road investment, according to the Freight Transport Association.
Supporting British Rail/Civil Service plans for electrification of 68 per cent of the freight railways in the country over the next 20 to 30 years, the FTA said: "It is necessary to keep electrification in perspective.
"It is not an alternative to investment in the roads pro gramme, especially if road transport has to meet an increased demand."
The FTA said last week that the long-term prospect of oil savings arising out of railway electrification strengthen its case, and say it must take precedence over the Channel tunnel in any set of BR priorities.
Its only reservations were to ask how BR will cope with the disruption to its traffic, which will happen throughout the electrification programme, and: to question whether successive Governments will support the original plans and their timetable.
