Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE FIRST major distributior cost survey since 1968 we: launched in London this weel by the centre for physical distri bution management.

Explaining the object of ths survey, CPDM manager Ra Horsley said that the centre's sis ter organisation in America hac carried out a similar but smalle survey and found physical distri bution costs averaged 22 pel cent of sales value.

And at least ten per cent of this could be saved by better distri. bution management, the survey found.

The British survey is beinc, conducted for CPDM by consul. tants PW International and takes the form of a comprehensive 20. page questionnaire. Topics coy. ered include type of business turnover, distribution survey level, packaging, warehousing, and so on.

The 5,000 member companie5 of the British Institute of Man. agement, of which the CPDM is. an offshoot, will be invited tc participate, as well as any other company which wishes to do so. The CPDM expects a final response of 500 to 750.

The questionnaire answers will be analysed by computer and participants will receive a breakdown of their distribution costs and performance, compared with the average in their particular industry. Ray Horsley stressed confidentiality.

In addition to this, a complete report will be published near the end of the year detailing the overall results and giving the most up to date comprehensive British distribution costs and statistics.

Brian McKibbin said that it would play a major role in the future: "A lot of rethinking will need to be done in distribution management. Our present distribution pattern is outdated."

Any company wishing to take part in the survey should contact the CPDM at Management House, Parker Street, London WC2B 1PT.
