OBJECTORSshould make themselves familiar with the penalties for Making false tatements in the traffic eating, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, Northern Licensing Authority, declared last week. He threatened to prosecute any objector who gavefalse evidence in his area. • Mr. Hanlon was cOmmenting on an allegation by Mr.John T. Bryers, Coniston, that objectors in a recent case had said they would work for Westinorland Cotinty Council, but had since refused . to do so. Mr. Bryers wanted to take over a Et licence held by Mr, -Fred C. Lace, Anibleside, to carry coke and coal within 12 miles and Other goods within 35 miles of Ambleside. There were objections froth five .Lake District hauliers.

. sand . and gravel merchant and last Stir/liner he bought Mr. Lace's lorry and business for. £40, of which £20 was goodwill. Since then he had operated under M e. Lace's licence, although he realized nOw that he had been doing so illegally. had given Working for them. Dealing With the 'present. .case, Mr. Musenft said Mt. Late's business Ceased more than a year ago, so the present application could not be for a confirmation.
Mr. Hanlon said he was satisfied that Mr. Bryers' allegations were based on hearsay and had no foundation. He refused his application because there was no evidence .about the extent of the former licenee-holder's operations. " Anyone going into the haialage business should receive proper advice," he added. ".It-is a pity that the applicant did not get advice or write to the Licensing A uthority.'!
