Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ARLY consultations with the British Transport Commission on its conduct until the new Transport Bill was introduced were promised by the Minister of Transport in the House of Commons on Monday. He had been asked by two Members whether he would suspend the powers held by the B.T.C. to close down efficient operators, and whether he would prevent the Road Haulage Executive from dispersing units and personnel of acquired undertakings.

Sir R. Cary asked the Minister whether he were aware that the present precipitate orders for the dispersal of old-established undertakings in the north-western division, without any indication of the future prospects of security of the persons employed, would obstruct the possible transfer of undertakings either to private enterprise or to a more appropriate Executive of the B.T.C. with which they could be more conveniently integrated.

FIRESTONE'S SAFETY AWARD

AMERICA'S highest award for safety in industry, the Award of Honour of the National Safety Council, has been won by the Firestone Tire and• Rubber Co. for the sixth time in seven years. Firestone is the only rubber concern to qualify on a company-wide basis. Of its 29 plants throughout the world, only one had a better record in 1951 than the English factory at Brentford. M iddx.
