REPORT by the surveyor to the

Pontypridd Urban District Council on the working costs of the petrol-driven vehicles, electric vehicles and 'horse transport for nine months ended December 31st last is regarded as satisfactory in respect of both types of mechanical vehicle.

The electrios, which are used for the. whole of the refuse collecting of the borough, in addition to short-distance haulage of working material, are amongst the most economically operated in the country. This is due wholly to excellent organization and intensive working. On no condition are the vehicles allowed, in daytime, to make out or home journeys unloaded, and they are charged at night at the council's electricity works, and the foolhours absorbed in the process are not taken from the working day, whilst the work of charging is done by the electricity works night staff. The unit charge is ald. The district affords the most severe tests for . petrol or electric -vehicles, and is extremely hilly, even for a Welsh mining centre. It is pointed. Ott that the figures for electric and petrol vehicles cannot bo,strictly compared, inasmuch as the petrol motors are used for long4listwice and time-saving journeys, and have not been worked on the same intensive method as the electrics.

In addition, the surveyor points out that the Baioo converted Fords are approaching 10 cwt.. heavier than the Ford tanner and haul only an equivalent load. Petrol costs., too, have dropped cansidelrably since the period under review. Both types, petrol and electnic,.are regarded as indispensable to the efficient working of the area, and additions to the fleet and the substitution of old machines will eventually be made. Horse transport costs are given as 6s. 6d. per ton; petrol vehieles as Os. 11d. per ton, and electrics as
