The Well-known Huddersfield Company Produces a Small Capacity Lorry and a Smart 14-seater Motor Coach.
TWO new chassis have been placed
on the market by Karricr Motors, Ltd., of diuddersfielel. The type C and type CX chassis are identical in all respects, except that the latter is equipped with single pneumatic tyres and slightly higher speed ratios are employed.
The type C is intended for net loads of 30 cwt. when the) bodywork does not weigh more than 10 cwt., whilst under the same conditions the type CX on pneumatics is designated as being suit' able for 2-ton loads or for a 14-seater char-ii-hancs.
We are reminded by the directors that some years ago the company (or rather its predecessors, Clayton a.nd Co. (Huddersfield), Lid.) manufactured chassis of similar load capacities, the types proving very popular and so successful that many of the vehicles are running and operating to this day. The demand for vehicles, of smaller load capacity than 4 tons to be found ou all hands, has recently grown, and there is everywhere a strong call for the small capacity coach mounted on pneumatic tyres, so that there is every prospect that the new Karrier productions will find favour wherever they are offered.
To deal with the chassis details, the four-eylinclered monobloc engine, 3i ins. bore and with a stroke of 5i ins., de velops 25 h-p. at 1,000 r.p.m. The lubricating oil is pressure fed to all bearings and water circulation is assisted by pump. The magneto coupling is provided with a fine adjustment. A Ferodo-lined cone clutch transmits the power to. a gearbox giving three forward speeds and reverse. On solid tyres the speeds are 5i-, 12 and lt4 rn.pb. • on pneumatics the speeds are 5, 13 and 20 m.p.h. The .shafts and gears are of hest nickelchrome steel, accurately machined, the control being centrally placed on top of the gearbox. A one-piece solid dropforged axle bed houses a worm-driven differential, the'' hand-operated brakes, acting on the drums on the rear wheels, being fully compensated. The foot brake, as is usual, acts on a drum at the rear of the gearbox. The front_ axle is a solid drop forging of H section. Great attention has been paid to the springing.
The wheels are of pressed steel and are fitted with floating bronze bushes. The front wheels of the lorry are equipped with 90 nom. by 720 mm. (rim fitting) solid rubber tyres and the rear wheels with 120 mm. by 720 mm. (rim fitting) single solids. The hubs are designed however, so that pneumatic tyres can be fitted On all wheels if desired. When equipped for passenger work pneumatic tyres of 'generous proportions are supplied. The spare pneumatic tyre is ac-commodatecl on a platform on a level with the outside running footboards and carried below the frame and the forward end of the propeller shaft. The frame, by the way, is of pressed steel and is of ample depth and section.
The front mudguards in both types are dome-shaped, those on the motor coach chassis being slightly larger and
flanged. The front of the vehicle is thoroughly smart, the gilled-toboradii-tor being well finished and being entirely suitable when the vehicle is equipped as a coach, The Karrier Superbe type of body is used. The sides are kept low and the topsides are rounded over the lines fairing gracefully into the curves of the seat backs. An all-metal windscreen is fitted above the dash, one half being free to hinge for the comfort of the driver. The elbow rest ,forms the lid of a receptacle on each side of the vehicle to accommodate the hood, which is divided longitudinally and folds flown sideways. This hood has now stood the test of a couple of winters and has proved a complete success. The vehicle without thehood raised looks particularly smart and graceful, and the time occupied in raising the hood is small.
The wheelbase of the new chassis is 11 ft. and the track 4 ft. 8 ins.
