Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Twrite to express my view

of the media coverage of the French seamen's strike action. Over the past two years I have watched with interest the progress of Meridian Ferries (Folkestone). What the media have failed to state is that the Polish crews were employed at the outset of the operation and are not a recent addition to cut costs.

The company has operated quite happily between Folkestone and Boulogne until now. I feel the French are using Meridian as a scapegoat, picking on the smallest operator thinking it will be a walkover.

Meridian offers 38 crossings in each direction each week, and has recently added Spirit of Independence to the service with its first ship, Spirit of Boulogne.

Meridian offers a service aimed at the small haulage business and owner-drivers who do not have the negotiating power of the "big boys" to get discounted rates from the ferry companies such as P&O and Stena Sealink.

Many of these small hauliers would be unable to offer their clients a competitive price without such a service, and so increase their chances of staying in business.

Meridian has given the small haulier a service which has no doubt helped them— now perhaps they can return the favour, in a small way, by supporting Meridian and not letting the French destroy a much needed service.

I am not connected in any way to the company Yvonne Friskney Folkestone,

Kent.
