Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The number of companies bidding for a contract to manage 100,000 non-combat Ministry of Defence vehicles has now escalated to more than 175.

Last December the MoD was talking to at least nine firms interested in the work (CM 814 Dec). And despite the influx of interest, the MoD says it would still be interested to hear from companies with "radical and innovative ideas", The MoD is thought to be favouring the idea of selling its support vehicle fleet of trucks, vans, Land Rovers, minibuses and cars, and then leasing them back. Such a move would generate cash for the forces to plough back into the operation. The MoD estimates leasing would also save it from purchasing £450m worth of vehicles over the next 10 years.

Companies which have so for expressed interest in the work include Cowie Interleasing; CTR; Foden/ Paccar; Leyland Dal; The Lex Group; PHH; Rover; Ryder, and Wadham Kenning.

Companies which have not already expressed interest, should contact the MoD as soon as possible. It hopes to have chosen a selection of contractors to pilot its favoured schemes by the end of 1995.
