• A continuing decline in tipper work over the past few years is being blamed for the demise of Victor Thompson's Cumbrian haulage business.
About 25 staff, including 12 drivers, were made redundant when Flimby-based V Thompson (Haulage) and its sister repair business, Thompson's Commercials, went into creditors' voluntary liquidation on Friday 3 March. It is thought that the closure of British Coal's Whitehaven open-cast site, a fire at its garage and a general decline in work led to the 30-year-old tipper and general haulage business business closing this month.
The assets of the company, including seven owned trucks and 15 semi-trailers, will be sold. Creditors' meetings are due to be held at the premises of Carlislebased insolvency practitioner Armstrong, Watson & Wood on the morning of Wednesday 15 March
