• The public inquiry into toll increases on the Severn Bridge this week heard that Welsh businesses, would pay the price for any hike. "It is indisputable that a 100% increase in tolls would affect many individual companies adversely," said the Freight Transport Association's South West regional director Barrie Hodson.
The DTp wants to double the £1 HGV toll in an attempt to pay off the bridge's £100 million building debt by 2006.
Welsh MPs also attacked the plan: "Surely Wales with its unemployment and so many social problems should be consi dered as a special case," said Newport East MP Roy Hughes.
