Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

report (CM 23 February) about the VBRA's adoption of ISO 9000.

The SMMT welcomes moves towards the introduction of higher-quality standards within the UK automotive industry_ Your report may inadvertently have given the impression that SMMT — through its Bodybuilders' Quali ty Code — and VBRA are promoting two separate standards within the bodybuilding industry. Confusion among customers is the last thing which is needed.

SMMTs Bodybuilders' Quality Code is based upon 8S5750: Part 2. Since 1987, this standard has been dualnumbered as ISO 9002. Thus, the VBRA, by adopting the ISO 9000 series of standards, has embraced the same standard as the SMMT.

We have been delighted to offer the VBRA free use of the text of the Bodybuilders' Quality Code and a leaflet describing the steps to be taken to obtain BSI registration.

We are confident that the SMMT and the VBRA can work together on this vital quality issue for the mutual benefit of our members and their customers.

R Davis,

Assistant secretary, SMMT, London SW1X
