• Six AWD buses with Locomotor bodies are bound for a tough life in Pakistan. Supplied through the Crown Agents, the vehicles are designed to carry heavy loads on bad roads. AWD stopped building buses last spring to concentrate on building up its share of the truck market.
The company said at that time that it would review its policy this year, but the Locomotor buses are not the first of a new breed: "We have no plans to reenter the PSV market," says AWD marketing director Peter Wragg.
Parking fees
• Coach operators using London's Regent Park coach park face an increase in charges from 26 to 216 from 1 April. Coaches bringing parties to the zoo will get a 210 refund, but it is not clear how this will work.
Grahame Smith, chairman of the BCC's London and Home Counties committee, has slammed the increase as "blatant discrimination" and "a smack in the face for responsible operators".
High-tech Spain
• Barcelona is pioneering the use of computerassisted bus operations in Spain by installing information systems in 150 vehicles. Drivers will communicate with a central control point where the actual location of a bus will be compared with its timetabled location. Messages will be transmitted to bus stops to tell passengers how long they have to wait.
Despite a high investment cost (of some 22,575,000) Barcelona Transport hopes the system will have paid for itself in two to four years as more pasengers are attracted to the buses.
