DESPITE a Government assurance that the interests of drivers and public were not being jeopardized by the decision to abolish records for some light vehicles, Labour Peers were obviously dissatisfied when the new move was announced last week. They were on the alert immediately Lord Chesharn, Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, said in the Upper .House that he understood the trade unions did not like the proposed change.
It was a very serious matter if relaxation • was taking place on these matters, because this was a way of checking that drivers were not working too long a stretch, with the possibility of danger to the public and to themselves, declared Lord Morrison of Lambeth.
The leader of the Opposition Peers, Lord Alexander of Hillsborough, said it was particularly interesting to hear that the 'unions had not agreed. "All our fears in the matter remain," he commented.
Lord Derwent, who had asked for some relaxation of records during the debates on the Road Traffic Bill, said there would be considerable disappointment that the radius of operation and the size of vehicles were both so restricted.
