/IR. E. G. WHITAKER, transport nu adviser to the board of Unilever, Ltd., has been elected president 'of the Institute of Transport for the year 196263. He has been a vice-president since 1960 and has served on the council since 1957.

After an apprenticeship in motor engineering, Mr. Whitaker, at the age of 21, started his own business as a haulier and motor repairer. Later he merged with the Gupwell Group of Companies in Birmingham and became a director in May, 1936. In April, 1940, he joined the Ministry of Food and served as an area meat and livestock forwarding officer until the following December when he was transferred to headquarters as an assistant director of transport. In January, 1947, he took up an appointment with Unilever, Ltd., and resigned his directorship in the Gupwell Group, including A. J. Gupwell (Transport), Ltd.

In 1954 he was appointed deputy transport adviser to the board of Unilever, Ltd., then joined the board of S.P.D., Ltd., the associate company of Unilever, Ltd., responsible for warehousing and distribution, and later became its chairman. He was appointed transport adviser to the board of Unilever, Ltd., in January, 1958.

Mr. Whitaker was a founder member of the Institute of Materials Handling and for its first two years was its deputy chairman. He is deputy chairman of the Central Transport Consultative Committee, a member of the Channel Tunnel Study Group, and of the Rochdale Committee. He is also chairman of the Transport Users' Policy Committee of the Federation of British industries and of the General Transport Committee, British National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce, NO NEW MASTIFFS FOR SALE
