A LMOST every day welding plays a more prominent part in the work of the automobile engineer. Maintenance departments and repairers are finding welding plant an indispensable part of their equipment and, particularly in the case of the latter, it is enabling valuable side lines to be opened up, when normal business is depressed as a result of the present emergency conditions.

Much interest, therefore, attaches to a new self-contained electric welder made by the Lincoln Electric Co., Ltd., Welwyn Garden City, Herts. It is a 200-amp. engine-driven arc-welding outfit, which is light, compact and inexpeftsive. Weighing 900 lb. and measuring 4 ft. 8 ins. long, 1 ft. 81 ins, wide and 3 ft. 11 ins, high, the unit can be sup

plied as a portable set or mounted on a wheeled trolley or in a lorry.

Power is supplied by a 26 h.p. four-cylindered petrol engine, which drives a variable-voltage dynamo having a current range of 40 to 250 amps. The scope of the plant includes metallic and carbon arc welding, and sheet-metal work, cast-iron repairing—cylinder blocks. heads, etc— fabricating jobs, hard facing and numerous other applications.

Features of the generator are the non-inflammable insulation employed. The armature is wound with glass-covered wire, the slots are mica lined and high-melting-point solder unites leads and commutator bars.
