THE Bank of England analysis of retail trade in . January indicates that the furniture trade shows the greatest advance over the previous year. Next in order come hardware, men's and boys' wear, sports requisites, fancy drapery and women's fashion wear.

Scotland. "

The iron and steel industry is brisk, as are the Glasgow shipyards. It is proposed to enlarge Dumfries Academy at an estimated cost of £40,000. Renfrew C.C. has passed plans for 252 houses. Cupar T.C. is to proceed with its five-year housing scheme. It is proposed to build 200 houses on the Copper Mine Field site, Gourock.

Glasgow Royal Mental Hospital, Gartnavel, is to be modernized at a cost of £32,000. Paramount Theatre Corporation is to build a cinema at 52-62, Renfield Street, Glasgow, and another cinema is to be erected at Motherwell on the site of the present New Century Theatre. Paisley T.C. is contemplating building 900 houses, wh.ilst 200 houses are to be constructed at BroXburn. Airdrie T.C. is to build 275 houses each year for five years.

North-east Coast.

The coal trade continues to be well maintained.

The Sutton Dwelling Trust, London, has accepted the tender of Keftlewell, Son and Co., Ltd., Hull, at £106,000, for the erection of 276 four-storey tenements at Newcastle. South Shields T.C. is to proceed with the construction of 230 houses. Gordon Durham and Co., East Boldon, Co. Durham, is to build a cinema at Stanley. • Lancashire and Cheshire.

There are substantial orders being booked for poplins, fabrics, dress goods and sateens, and the home-trade demand is broadening. The engineering industry is definitely improving; there is more activity in the iron and steel markets, whilst machine-tool makers are obtaining more orders.

Work will commence shortly on the Roman Catholic Cathedral at Liverpool. It is proposed to spend £522,000 on extensions to Brockhall Institution, near Whalley, and to erect a public library at Stretford.

In the leather markets there .have been better inquiries for sole leather, and there is still a keen demand for sandal shoes.

Manchester T.C. is to consider plans for an exhibition hall in Queen's Road, to cost .£300,000. A swimming bath, to cost £104,000, is to be built at Claremont Park, North Shore, Blackpool. It is proposed to erect a swimming pool, ballroom, arcade and a car park at Sale.

Yorkshire.

The woollen industry is fairly active and looms in Bradford are well employed. Manufacturers of safety-razor blades are still very busy and the cutlery trade in general has benefited from the B.I.F.

Hull T.C. is considering a scheme involving the erection of 1,100 dwellings. Pocklington R.D.C. is to proceed with its shim-clearance scheme, whirst Darlington R.D.C. is considering a plan for m houses.

East Anglia.

Norwich T.C. has applied for sanction to borrow £226,500 for important building work.

Midlands.

The hosiery trade is decidedly better than it was a year ago, and the prospects are most encouraging. The children's section is specially active. There is a fair demand for rayon goods. A quantity of business has come to the pottery industry from the B.I.F., this remark also applying to the hardware and hollow-ware trades.

Manufacturers of small iron castings are busy, builders' merchants are active and the nut and bolt industry shows definite signs of improvement. Birmingham steelworks are busy. Northampton 'manufacturers of boots and shoes are busily engaged on numerous spring orders. Wales.

The tin-plate industry continues to

be active. Morpeth R.D.C. has received plans from Messrs. H. Berg, of myth, for 72 houses in Hepscott. Wrexham T,C. is considering building a new town hall. A syndicate has bought a large portion of the Vardre Park estate for building purposes.

West Country.

Exeter T.C. is considering road-improvement schemes and other work, estimated to cost £100,000. Devon C.C. proposes to spend over £80,000 on new buildings.

London and Home Counties.

The tone in the timber trade is much brighter. The leather market remains steady, and some good business is being done in lightweight English and wetsalted bends.

Bexhill T.C. hopes to borrow £80,000 for the proposed sea-front scheme. Plans have been prepared for the Greyhound Club and dance hall, Walthamstow, whilst 200 houses are to be built in Woodford.

It is proposed to extend Farnborough Hospital at an estimated cost of £59,300.
