• HGV traffic is at an all-time high, according to the latest Department of Transport statistics. HGVs covered 6.3 billion vehicle kilometers (BVK) — marginally up on the last quarter of 1987, while the 1987 total was 23.6BVK, up from 22.3BVK in 1986.
The 13% increase in HGV traffic in the first quarter is largely accounted for by good weather, cheaper dery and the leap year, which provides an extra day of operation. Five
axle artics are particularly busy; first-quarter traffic was up 31% on 1987. Artie traffic as a whole rose by about 15% in the same period: Light van traffic also rose in the first quarter — up 3% on the last quarter of 1987 to 7.3BVK — but the recent upsurge in heavy PSV traffic seems to be faltering. In the first quarter PSV traffic fell by 2% from the final quarter of 1987, but was still 11% up on the first quarter of 1987.
