If as a child I had tried to run away from home I should have been eating my meals standing for some weeks. But times have changed. Seven-year-old Chris Hitchins, who was caught decamping from Bristol to his Scottish birthplace, became an overnight celebrity on television.
He promised not to run away again if his father bought him a kilt for his birthday. Juvenile blackmail paid off when Independent Express, of Northampton, got in on the act and drove Chris and his 17-yearold brother to Scotland in a parcels trunker and took him back to Bristol with a bespoke kilt from Edinburgh.
