D. E. A. Pettit, chairman of the National Freight Corporation and president of the Chartered Institute of Transport; is to be the next president of the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition. He will succeed Lord Chesham who is retiring from the position at the annual general meeting in October.
Aid William Sefton, leader of Liverpool City Council, has been elected chairman of the Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority. He succeeded Aid Sir Harold Macdonald Steward, who had been chairman since the inception of M PTA in 1969. The new deputy chairman is Aid Hugh Baird, of Bootle, who is a former busman. He joined Liverpool Corporation Transport as a conductor in 1929, became a driver in 1935 and moved to another job in 1945.
Arthur Edwards retires today after 50 years service. Mr Edwards joined Temple Press in 1922. and has been an advertising representative for Commercial Motor for the past 26 years.
J. R. Jefferson, 41, has been appointed deputy director of the South Western Road Construction Unit at Taunton and will take up his appointment on July 17. Mr Jefferson has been superintending engineer in the Devon sub-unit of SWRCU since 1969:

A. C. C. "Sandy" Ferguson, 35, has been appointed home sales manager by Ferodo Ltd in anticipation of the retirement on July 31 of the company's present hsm, C. P. Lyall. Mr Ferguson joined Ferodo as a management trainee in 1960. He became distribution manager in 1966, responsible for the entire distribution chain. Ken Holford, 53, who has spent nearly 40 years at Ferodo, succeeds Mr Ferguson. Alan E. Kershaw, 45, becomes home sales manager for original equipment in the UK. He joined Ferodo in 1971 from Herbert Terry and Sons Ltd, Redditch.
Christopher J. Myatt, 28, a director of Tilsley and Lovett Ltd, the Stoke-on-Trent based company of diesel engine and mechanical engineers since 1970, has been appointed managing director. Roger Tame becomes sales director, and Frank Powell works director.
G. B. Jubb, purchasing manager of Marston Radiators Ltd since 1967, has been appointed a director.
Jack Reid, formerly of Moir and Baxter Ltd, Edinburgh, has been appointed to the board of John Willment (Trucks) Ltd, Twickenham. Mr Reid retains the general management of that company, and Dennis Cross, formerly of Spurlings, has joined him as sales manager.
John J. Byrne, 35, deputy general manager of CIE, the Eire transport authority, since 1970, has succeeded Daniel Herlihy as gm. Mr Herlihy as retired after 21 years with the company which he joined as chief engineer.
David Lang, 33, has been appointed industrial sales manager, Metalastik Products Group of Dunlop Polymer Engineering Division and will be responsible for sales of antivibration mountings, flexible couplings, and bearings. He joined the company in 1967 from Bristol Siddeley Engines Ltd.
P. J. Ashley and W. W. Coxshaw, joint general managers of MBAC Ltd, Holloway, have been appointed directors. S. L. Beney and W. Butler have been appointed directors of Sudlows Carriers Ltd, Weaste, Salford, Lancashire, the WCB Group transport and haulage subsidiary. In addition, John Hill, who is joint managing director of the principal group company, WCB Containers Ltd, and a group director, has been appointed chairman.
Mike Janisch, 29, has been promoted publicity manager of Tor Line following an extensive study of freight and passenger department marketing requirements.
Several appointments have been announced by the Scotts of Nottingham Group. Mike Grant and Eric Nicoll have been appointed directors of W. J. Boyes and Son Ltd, distributor for ERF and Gardner in London and South East England. George Mills, who joined Scotts of Nottingham last year, has been appointed northern regional sales manager, and Colin Percival Midland regional sales manager.

A. F. Rowe (northern area director, Atlas Express Ltd) has been elected chairman of the Scottish section of the Chartered Institute of Transport in succession to A. OBITUARY
We record with regret the death of A. J. Bryant. Mr Bryant, 56, was managing director of Fromant Trailers Ltd. He was formerly transport engineer with Reed Transport Ltd. Mr Bryant's place as managing director will be taken by Mr C. A. Frornant who remains chairman.
