HE North Midland Lorry Driver of the 1 Year eliminating round at Desford on Sunday was first-class-and yet again we had a lovely day for this Leicestershire event. So many people, too, were praising the help given by executives of the Caterpillar Tractor Company Ltd. in the organizing.
Large areas had been cleared of plant for the driving tests and there was ample room for spectators to see without getting in the way. At Melton Mowbray cattle market, the previous venue, I gather that conditions were not ideal.
There were 124 contestants from some 30 companies, with a preponderance of C licence vehicles, some from as far afield as Nottingham and Peterborough. There was some criticism, particularly by drivers unfamiliar with Leicester at the sign-posting for the road route. The signs were big enough to see but earlier warning of turns would have helped some drivers, particularly where road-lane markings existed.
Sixteen contestants lost no marks in their highway code tests. Some low scores were made in the route test but one driver lost 150 points on the five-mile circuit!
D. Gee, driving a Dennis, did well to lose only 35+ points to win Class D-it was hotly contested with no more than eight points dividing the first four drivers.
W. T. Griffin, the day's champion, won the North Midland eliminator last year and he will carry the hdpes of many for • his success in the final.
