MEMBERS of South Western Traffics Ltd., this week visited France to see French hauliers and discuss the possibility of reciprocal training.
At an informal meeting on Wednesday in the offices of the Le Havre port authority, Mr. J. Weinstein, head of the international branch of AFTIR, said that by the end of the year there would almost certainly be full reciprocity with British Hauliers able to obtain French permits direct from the Ministry of Transport in London.
"This will complete the overall European pattern," he said. "We already have these arrangements in France with all other European countries."
Mr. D. 0. Good, chairman of South Western Traffics Ltd., said after the meeting: "This could well prove to be an historic occasion. We consider that it would be futile to wait for the completion of the Common Market negotiations. Road haulage has a reputation for breaking barriers and this time it has fallen to South Western Traffic to lead the way."
The meeting agreed to exchange information on facilities available, South Western Traffics' office in Southampton being suggested as the administration point as the exchange of traffic developed.
