Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE output of commercial vehicles in Britain for April averaged about 5.100 weekly. Of these, • 10,800 were exported during the month. 'Owing to the Easter holiday period, overall output and shipment figures show a fall, as compared with those for recent months. During the same period, 8,401 agricultural tractors, 95 pedestriancontrolled delivery vans, -and 502 works trucks r were produced. The 19,360 goods vehicles and tractors constructed were made up of 9,545 of under 15 cwt., 9.153 of 15 cwt. and up to 6 tons, and 662 of over 6 tons. Battery-electric vehicle production for the month was 220. The total of passenger service vehicles was 843, comprised of 489 single-deck and 336 double-deck motor buses and 18 trolleybuses. RACKHAM JOINS SIMMS

THE emergence of new products and designs fromSimms Mptor Units, Ltd., East Finchley, London, N.2, is suggested by the appointment of Mr. G. J. Rackham as director and chief eneineer. Until recently Mr. Rackham was director and chief engineer of A,E.C., Ltd., Southall, and had previously been chief engineer of Leyland Motors, Ltd.

LICENCES GRANTED TO DEMOLITION CONTRACTOR

E'OR carrying debris from demolition I. sites, Mr. Harry Hodges, Sheffield, has been granted four B licences to operate within a radius of 20 miles of Sheffield Post Office, by the Yorkshire Licensing Authority. The licences' cover one vehicle already in operation under a C licence, and three others to he acquired. The hearing was reported in "The Commercial Motor" for May 26.

MIDLAND RED INCENTIVES

service with the Midland Red concern are in future to have free passes to permit them, subject to amnia! review, to travel free on any of the company's services. Those with 40 or more years' service ate to receive •a gold watch or other gift of equal value of their own selection. The passes and gifts will be additional to the certificates and medals already presented to long-service

employees.

INCREASE OF 22 COACHES GRANTED

AFTER showing in evidence, that last year over 1,000 intending passengers had been disappointed, and that since February 2, this year, 480 bookings had been refused, Worthington Motor Tours, Birmingham, were granted an increase of 22 vehicles to be used for period returns during the August holiday week. Application was made by the concern to. the West Midland Licensing Authority for permission to increase the number of coaches from 14 to 34. Most of the bookings had been requested for Southsea and Great Yarmouth, and the application asked for a maximum of 12 coaches for any one destination. Objections were made by the Railway Executive. the Midland' Red concern and a number of others, which. stressed that in their experience coach business showed a marked decrease over last year's figures. Granting an increase from 14 to 36 coaches, the Licensing Authority gave permission for 27 of the vehicles to he operated during Birmingham holiday week. The licences cover Brighton, Bournemouth, Southsea, Ilfracombe, Great Yarmouth and Blackpool, but Southport and Porthcawl were excluded. More coaches were permitted for Sunday excursion work. • Renewal of the open licence held by the concern for trips to London on 110 times a year, entailing 600 coaches including reliefs, was refused, permission being given to run coaches 26 times a year. An appeal may be made against this decision.
