Length and Height Restrictions Introduce Interesting Problems in the Design of an Outsize Tank-trailer Outfit A TANK trailer, having what is considered to be the largest-capacity container to be so installed, has recently been completed by R. A. Dyson and Co., Ltd., 76-80, Grafton Street, Liverpool, S. in co-operation with the Aluminium Plant and Vessel Co., Ltd., builder of the tank,
The tank, which has a capacity of 95 barrels—equal to 3,420 gallons—is constructed throughout of Firth's F.D.P. stainless steel, having all internal welds ground and polished, careful iespection being necessary to determine the area of the welds.
In designing this outfit a number of knotty problems had to be solved, including one in respect of legal requirements governing the overall
length to 22 ft„ and the need for keeping the overall height under 9 ft.. owing to the machine having to pass under a low archway. As the tank is approximately 21 ft. TO ins. long and has a diameter of 5 ft. 91 ins., excluding certain projecting fittings on top, the dimensions of the trailer had to be kept within fine limits.
Another problem was to keep the laden weight down to 19e tons, and this led to the utilization of the frame cross members in the dual capacity of tank bearers. By the use of Chromador steel for the trailer frame, ample strength is secured with members of moderate dimensions.
As will be seen from the accompanying illustration, the trailer is of the six-wheeler type, and Ackermann steering is provided for the front wheels. Girling brakes, with dual operation by vacuum and cable, take effect on all four rear wheels.
The five holding-down bands are in stainless steel and are provided with special means for adjustment.
This outfit has been supplied to a well-known brewery concern and is being used for the transport of beer.
