Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Pontypridd is desirous of ac quiring a motor fire-engine.

The Chief Officer of the Calcutta Fire Brigade is now in England, on a tour of inspection.

The L.C.C. tenders, to which we have made several earlier references, must be lodged at or before II a.m. on Tuesday the 28th inst.

A deputation from the Keighley Town Council has been at Leeds, to examine the work done by the new Dennis turbine fire-engine which we illustrated last week.

Redcar U.D.C. is probably going to spend the modest sum of £130 on the purchase of a light motor chassis, with a view to its being refitted to convey a hose-box and a 30 ft. ladder.

Wath U.D.C. has not yet been successful in obtaining the sanction of the Local Government Board to a loan for the purchase of a motor fire-engine, but we understand that a fresh application will be made.

Frankfort-on-the-Main is now in possession of an automobile set for fire-extinguishing operations, the vehicles consisting of an electrically-propelled escape, a Daimler-Schiele firepump, and ex-gas-engine transformed into a motor-driven turbine-pump Judging from the trend of things, the so-called gas-engine, i.e., where pres sure from carbonic-acid gas serves to force water out of a small tank, is

likely to be entirely superseded in the near future. Given suitable pumping gear, one wonders a little that it

should be thought necessary to equip first-aid petrol vehicles with carbonicacid-gas apparatus, and treat the engine as a negligible quantity. Grimsby Town Council is asking tenders for a petrol motor fire-engine with a pumping capacity of 430 gallons per minute, and tenderers must make an allowance for one of the Council's old engines. Tenders must be delivered on or before Saturday the 2nd pros. It was thought, some few weeks ago, that the purchase had been definitely settled.

At the last meeting of the Ealing Town Council, a discussion arose with reference to a suggestion in the annual report of the Chief Officer of the Fire Brigade that a motor first-aid machine should be purchased. This, he stated, would mean a saving of £100 per annum in the keep of two horses. The question of replacing a worn-out steamer, and whether a motor firstaid machine should be purchased, is to be considered later. Argyll Fire-engine for Oldham.

The second of the two motor firetenders for Oldham Corporation has. now been completed at the Argyll works, Alexandria, N.B. The vehicle is intended for first-aid work ; it carries a 36 ft. telescopic ladder, two hose lockers for a minimum of eighteen. 40-yd. lines, and box accommodation for tools, stands, pipes, branches, etc. The engine is about the most powerful yet turned out by the company, being of 50-60 lip. The four cylinders. are separately cast, a half-compression device gives easy starting, and the ignition is dual. Four speeds and a reverse are fitted, and a maximum speed of about 35 m.p.h. is attainable.

Berlin's "All Motor" Fire Stations.

On Wednesday, 1st inst., Berlin's fourth all-motor station, situated in the Ungarnstrasse, near Schiller Park, was informally opened, the inaugural ceremony taking place on the following day in the presence of von Moltke, Prussian Minister of the Interior, the Berlin Commissioner of Police, and several other officials of high standing. The indefatigable Director Reichel, chief of Berlin's fire-brigade, who is. mainlyresponsible for the motorization of the city's stations, welcomed the guests, and briefly described the set of vehicles, which are electricdriven and conform to the sets serving the other stations. A Turin municipal official was amongst the guests, and he evinced the liveliest interest in some practice manceuvres. In response to a " call," the four vehicles got away in as many seconds! How's that for promptness ?
