• Trials of British Telecom's world-first satellite racliopaging service are to start at the end of the year, enabling long distance drivers to be contacted while they are on the road throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Messages will be routed via BTI's satellite earth station to an INMARSAT satellite which will beam them back to small antennae mounted flush with lorry cab roofs. A message pager in the cab will display and print the message. The whole system draws no more than six watts.
