TAYSIDE Region transport committee has approved a rationalisation of the criteria for elderly persons' concessionary travel regulations. As many as 300 women a year in the region could benefit as a result of the move.

In a report, transport director Mr Neil Townend said his department received frequent complaints from applicants for passes because of the complicated criteria. At present the criteria are men aged 65 and over and women aged 60 and over in receipt of State retirement pensions, and widows aged 60 and over, with passholders being full-time residents within Tayside Region.

Mr Townend said that in particular there were complaints from women who were 60 whose husbands had not yet reached pensionable age who did not qualify unless they had a retirement pension in their own right. It was both fairer and simpler to apply the age criterion alone, 60 for women and 65 for men, with the applicants being normally resident in Tayside Region. The committee voted in favour of the change.
