INCREASES to single. fares of United I Counties Omnibus Co. Ltd. were granted on Wednesday. The Eastern and East Midland Traffic Commissioners, sitting jointly at Cambridge, allowed the company's application with two minor adjustments after an eleventh-hour withdrawal of objections from local authorities.

The rises will be mostly id. on single fares up to is. A small percentage of fares, which were sub-standard for the mileage they carried, will go up by 2d.

Mr. R. C. Sawtell, representing nine county councils, said that on the previous day the authorities had come to an agreement with the company and withdrawn their objections. This was the result of concessions on return fares in the company's original application.

The company agreed to a reduction of 2d. on returns for 9d., lid. and Is. Id. single fares, making a total " concession " of 4d. on these returns.

After the United Counties case had been presented, the chairman of the Commissioners, Mr. W. P. S. Ormond, said: "We consider the overall estimates of the company are not over-optimistic and that they justify a grant." He added that the Commissioners had made two alterations to the application, providing for a longer journey for 5d. and 7d.

On Tuesday, fare increases of up to 3d. on single fares for Eastern National Omnibus Co. Ltd. were granted.

The Eastern Traffic Commissioners, sitting with the Metropolitan Commissioner (Mr. D. L R. Muir) allowed the company's application for rises of id. on most fares up to 2-4 miles, 2d. on fares up to 9.2 miles and 3d. on all other stage fares. New cheap-day return fares on certain routes were also approved.

An objection from the joint traffic committee of Essex local authorities—representing principal local authorities in the county, had been withdrawn.

Mr. Ormond commented: "The fares that have been •put forward are in our view reasonable."
