T the first meeting of the National Negotiating Committee for the Road Haulage Industry (Hire or Reward). in London on Tuesday, Mr. W. J. Packer was elected chairman. He is Region l group secretary, commercial services, of the Transport and General Workers' Union, but as he could not be present at this first meeting the chair was taken by Mr. N. T. O'Reilly, who is chairman of the employers' panel of the Road Haulage Wages Council_ Mr. O'Reilly has been elected vice-chairman of the new committee.

Over 20 representatives of the transport unions and the Road Haulage Association attended this inaugural meeting, a large part of which was devoted to elections and procedure. As well as the TGWU, the Scottish Commercial Motormen's Union, the General and Municipal Workers' Union, and the United Road Transport Workers' Association were represented.

Productivity was a prominent topic in the talks, especially in reference to the report of the Prices and Incomes Board; no decisions were taken but there was a general discussion over the whole field. The meeting was described as an amicable and useful one, and there will be another on September 14, when it is expected that a firm agenda of specific subjects will be tackled.

Joint secretaries were appointed on Tuesday: Mr, R. P. Duffy, who is RHA liaison secretary. and Mr. A. G. Beck. commercial services national secretary of the TGWU.
