WEIGHING unladen 7 tons 15 cwt. IT and with an overall height of 8 ft. 6 in., an Atkinson M.1586 modified eight-wheeled chassis, fitted with a light-alloy 24-cu.-yd. end-tipping body, has been supplied by Price's (Earl Shilton), Ltd, Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, to a Midland operator who required the maximum payload capacity and a minimum height for hopper loading.

The makers supplied a chassis with a wheelbase of 16 ft. 7 in. in place of

the normal 15 ft. 1 in., and the body was constructed by Pilot Works, Ltd., Bolton, to the specification of the distributors. A Pilot 1I7 twin-ram lifting gear with a capacity of 15-18 tons is employed, which is mounted under the body.

The vehicle is powered by a Gardner 6LW unit and equipped with a doubledrive rear bogie with a third differential. The tyre equipment comprises Michelin Metallic 9.00-in. by 20-in, covers.

The body is of bolted construction, gusseted and braced with light-alloy brackets. The sides, tailboard and floor are built of corrugated section and reinforced with top-hat members. The longitudinals are also of light-alloy, channel sections of 8 in. by 3 in. being employed. The body is cross-braced internally by steel stays.

Another interesting Atkinson-based tipper vehicle was supplied by Price's a few months ago to the National Coal Board for internal use. The chassis is a modified S.1266 12-ton six-wheeler with a wheelbase of 13 ft. 3 in. and powered by a Gardner 6LW engine.

Heavy-duty back axles arc employed and other non-standard parts include heavier cross-members, springs and spring hangers. The vehicle is equipped with I1.00-in. by 20-in. tyres at the front and 10.00-in. by 20-in, covers at the rear. The bogie is fitted with a third differential to facilitate continual turning in a small radius.

The Pilot twin-ram under-body lifting gear is also of a special heavy-duty type and the Pilot all-steel 10-cu.-yd. body was built to Price's design to withstand severe conditions. The vehicle is used to handle . sticky material, which is sometimes not dislodged until the body is fully tipped.
