Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Fears that six-month vehicle excise duty discs will be scrapped have been dismissed by the DOT.

A Government document which suggests scrapping of the six-month licence was leaked to shadow Transport Minister Keith Bradley—it argued that large savings could be made at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency by selling only annual licences.

But the DOT denies that the results of the efficiency review currently in front of ministers contains any recommendations to force operators to buy 12month tax discs. "There are no plans to do it," says the DOT.

Bradley says: "If they have backed off that is fine but it was certainly included in the review of the DVLA...we will have to watch the Government diligently. If the Tories win the next election they will be looking at all possible ways to cut public spending."
