Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• UK transport companies have done well in the annual Financial Times review of the top 500 European companies.

Leading the pack is NFC, which climbs to 230 from last year's 368. It has also entered the Sunday Times table of the top 100 UK companies at 77: "Shares have gone up in value because we are proving our resilience," it says. Others in the top 500 include Christian Salvesen, up from 480 to 383; and Tiphook, up from 437 to 393. But the Securicor Group, placed 446 last year, has slipped out of the table.

Across Europe transport had a lean year, with the sector as a whole suffering a 35% downturn in profitability.

The number one position for the second year running goes to UK/Netherlands petrol giant, Shell.

Vehicle manufacturers although featuring higher in the 500 than transport operators — saw a slide in their fortunes.
