• A leaked European Commission report recommending the break-up of the Post Office's monopoly has met with a mixed response from private parcels carriers.
The report suggests that the £1 minimum delivery charge for private delivery should be lowered to 25p — but few nextday operations believe that they could run a profitable service at such low rates.
"A company of our size could not undertake a first-class mail service on the scale of the Post Office," says City Link managing director David Kennard. But he believes there could be fresh opportunities on business-tobusiness deliveries: "It's very exciting," he adds.
Parceline sales and marketing director Robin Davies believes that hauliers could benefit from being allowed to carry out trunking operations for the Royal Mail.
His company would like to extend its international services.
