THE FIRST sailing on the new UK Nigerian ferry between Felixstowe and Lagos (CM January 2) leaves next weekend with a full complement of 60 trailers. A spokesman for the operators, Wacro Lines, told CM that the trailers were loaded with agricultural machinery, electrical generators, wireless equipment, civil engineering tools, mobile libraries, Land-Rovers and cars.

It is not yet certain whether or not any of the drivers' berths will be occupied, but Mr Cliff Meredith, the UK operations manager, anticipates that some of the loads will be accompanied since they are consigned to destina tions 2,000 and 3,000 miles distant from Lagos.

"The ferry will operate on a one-month cycle and this will mean that drivers will return to the UK on the next ferry after discharge. The company also anticipates a reasonable proportion of loaded trailers on the return journey," he said.

Mr Meredith confirmed that the ro-ro ferry will discharge at Lagos within 12 hours of arrival and 12 hours later will be re-loaded and leaving Lagos for Felixstowe. Mr Andy Spraggons of Anglo-Balkan Carriers is flying to Nigeria, two days after the ferry leaves Felixstowe, to manage the Lagos end of the operation.
