Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

transport by David and freight handling Lowe No tainting • Independent tests carried out on Cargoboard (glass-reinforced-polyester faced plywood for ISO container construction) have shown that tainting of contents does not occur in containers made from this material.

The tests were carried out strictly in accordance with BS.3755 but the exposure period of 24 hours was increased to two months in order to make the tests more critical.

The results show that the monomeric styrene air pollution within a standard 20ft container made of Cargoboard is unlikely to be more than two parts per million when sealed for long periods.

The g.r.p. facing process is claimed to be exclusive to Flexo Plywood Industries.

Clydeport extension

• Clyde Port Authority has confirmed that it is planning to extend its container terminal at Greenock at an estimated cost of £1 .5m; the scheme will be submitted to the Minister of Transport and the National Ports Council for approval.

The Clydeport officials anticipate that the development could be completed in two years; included in the plan are extended berths, more storage space and increased use of mechanical handling equipment.

Atlantic rum run

• Lightweight liquid containers, which will soon be carrying overproof rum across the Atlantic from Guadeloupe in the Leeward Islands to a blending plant in Europe, and from Kingston, Jamaica, to Liverpool, are seen in the picture being loaded at the Bilston works of the John Thompson transporter division. The containers, part of a consignment of 30 ordered by the House of Seagram Ltd., are lined with stainless steel and are each capable of holding 575gal of liquid.

Constructed in polyester resin with multiple layers of glass-reinforced plastics, the containers, which can carry a variety of wines and spirits, are fitted with built-in forkways and lifting eyes for easy handling.

First 1,000

• The first container manufacturer to produce 1,000 insulated ISO units under the Lloyd's container certification scheme is Bona!lack and Sons Ltd. The containers have the Coldsaver patented construction. Latest models (Mk. VI) have special longitudinals which allow any panel to be removed for repair without disturbing the main structure or insulation.

Double-enders improve productivity

• Improved loading techniques and savings in time on roping and sheeting operations have been achieved by Broadway Transport Ltd., Rossendale, Lancs, using York Freightmaster semi-trailers with doors at each end.

The 30ft vans, used by Broadway in wholesale carpet delivery, have been fitted with additional front-end doors to facilitate loading of carpets by fork-lift truck from both ends without the need for manhandling heavy carpet rolls. The vans have replaced rigid platform trucks and as a result productivity improvement in the shape of reduced turn-round times has been considerable. Additional benefits are better protection against weather and theft. The vehicles are used for deliveries at home and abroad.
