depot inspectors ,at.. the Country bus garages of London Transport. As a' war measure, 50 of them are abeing engaged forthwith to replace men who have been called up for military service. Their duties will be exactly the same as those of the men they are replacing. They will be responsible for the punctual departure of the buses from the garage each morning. It will be their duty to see that every conductor's box contaius a supply of dickets, a punch, and a "cash total" sheet on which to record the day's takings. At the end of the day they will deal with the.work which arises after the buses return, the checking-in of ticket-boxes, and the paying-in of takings.

In addition, 35 women are also replacing men as ticket-clerks at a number of Country bus garages. Their duties .comprise the replenishing of the stocks of tickets in the conductors' boxes and compiling the cash total sheets.

SUCCESS OF ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE LORRIES IN LIBYA

Bm dramatic bid for control of North Africa and the Mediterranean ports, tells a heartening story of the American manufacturers of Tanks, trucks and armoured cars which are playing an important part in the suc-' cess of this bold venture, writes an official of the Marmon-Herrington Co.,

of Indiana. •

Pictures, now arriving in America, of soldiers aboard all-wheel-drive lorries, prove the amazing efficiency of _these vehicles in the shifting desett sands. Capable of relatively high speeds, they have trpset the enemy's plans and have given the British an incalculable advantage. Among the American equipment arriving at Egyptian ports over the past five months have been large numbers of Marmon-Herringtonall

wheeI-drive converted Fords shipped from the Marmon-Herrington plant in, Indianapolis, Indiana, and from the Ford Motor Co. of Canada.

Travelling at speeds which contribute greatly to the element of surprise, the writer claims that these vehicles have enabled the British tocut off whole -commands of the enemy at Bardia, around Tobruk, and at other desert points, allowing the combat vehicles. which include American Tanks, to join battle with _the encircled Italians and Germans.

MUNICIPAL B119 OPERATORS FACE PROBLEMS TOGETHER

D LACKBURN Corporation Ii a s U.approved the establishment of an advisory committee, to include Blackburn, Accrington, Darwen, Haslingden and Rawtenstall transport undertakings, to deal with problems created by the war.

There • has been 'a conference of Blackburn, Accrington and Darwen undertakings to consider the imple, menting of the report prepared by Messrs. Fearnley and Collins, expert advisers, on establishing a unified transport system for the three towns. INTERCHANGE OF LAUNDRY CUSTOMERS SAVES FUEL UNDER a voluntary scheme to save petrol on laundry deliveries-in operation since the beginning of the war-Leeds laundries have reduced consumption by about 50 per cent on the pre-war gallonage, notwithstanding that the amount of work they do has increased because many housewives are engaged on war service.

The saving has, been partly effected by the cutting out of inter-town journeys through the interchange of customer's whereby, for example, Leeds laundries exchanged their Bradford customers for the Leeds customers of Bradford laundries. A further economy has been secured by the adoption of simultaneous collection and delivery.

The suggestion in some newspapers that groceries may soon be delivered in laundry vans wider transport rationalization measures is unlikely to apply in Leeds, according to laundry circles in the city, because laundry vans are being used to full capacity as a result of the voluntary scheme.

.SPECIALS FOR DAIRYMEN AT TORONTO SHOW

NAOTOR vehicles were prominently "VI displayed at the recent Dairy Industries Exposition held in Toronto. Vans were shown by Divco, International, General Motors, and White, all being of the step-in retail-delivery type, and affording some indication of the general trend in design.

Canadian bodybuilders exhibited icecream bodies, whilst the Quirk Crate Co. showed a refrigerator cabinet fitted to one of the White Horse vans. This full-size cabinet fits closely inside the body and refrigerates the entire load, making it possible for the driver to. deliver milk to the customer at a temperature of 40 degrees in any season. The cabinet idea is entirety hew and, it is understood, was shown mainly to learn dairymen's reactions.
