Speculation mounts over financial problems at Pic UNION LEADERS are bracing themselves for more had news from the removals giant Pickfords when they hold a series of meetings with its management next week (20-24 February). Last year the company closed eight of its 93 depots, blaming falling demand in the housing market (C145 May 2005). The meetings between the Transport & General Workers Union (T&G). the United Road Transport Union and executives from Pickfords' US-based parent company Sirva are expected to focus on proposals for stemming major financial losses. Ron Webb. the T&G's national secretary for road transport. says: -We're expecting some bad news.The priority for both unions is to secure employment.'" Webb adds that last year, the T&G 's 600 members at Pick fords were given no wage increase because of the company's financial situation. But he adds that redundancies had been limited following the depot closure& A spokesman for Sirva confirms that the meeting is taking place but declines to comment on what will he discussed.
