A TWO-YEAR programme of the Department of Employment's work research unit -will be particularly concerned to encourage the involvement of people in the process of improving the quality of -their working lives-.
They can do so very simply by trying to put into the job a little more than they hope to take out.
The Institute of the Motor Industry is thinking on somewhat similar lines. It has established new standards of professional competence and seeks "to encourage employees to work to these levels and to commit themselves to a code of conduct governing their business and ethical behaviour as well as establishing their techni
cal capabilities".
I am old enough to remember the days, long before the unjustified automatic annual pay in-' crease in trade and industry, when work was fun. I despair of their e+ returning, despite high-minded endeavours by the Government and others.
