ONE of the most important north-south transit routes in the Rotterdam port area, the Benelux Tunnel, has been taken over by the Dutch State highways authority and freed from road tolls.
Built in 1967, the tunnel has had to accommodate steadily increasing traffic; last year's daily average of 50,000 vehicles represented an increase of almost 25 per cent over 1978.
