:ING TRAILERS Ltd of Maret Harborough, whose name ,as recently changed from .ing Truck Equipment (CM ebruary 9), has constructed hat is believed to be the ggest semi-trailer ever made this country. It will be aerated in Abu Dhabi and is I be pulled by a Faun 239 kW 20 hp) German tractive unit. The gross train weight will 224 tonnes (220 tons) giving le trailer a payload capacity ' 171 tonnes (168 tons). A xee axle jeep dolly had to be ;ed to take some of the 70 toil ng-pin load because this was o high for any normal trac,re unit.

The semi-trailer is 27.4mm Oft) long and 3.96mm (13ft) wide and has a specially designed rear suspension system consisting of two individual tandem eight-in-line walking beam bogies connected by fabricated balance beams which gives a full compensation effect to the eight axles. Each of the axles has a 16 ton capacity giving the rear suspension a total capacity of 128 tons. The jeep dolly weighs 8 tons and has three conventional four wheel axles on spring suspension. A 180 ton capacity fifth wheel coupling is used to connect the trailer to the dolly, both of which have 89mm (3.5in) king pins.

Heavy cranes and other plant and equipment will be loaded on to the trailer by using the spring assisted ramps at the rear which lead up to a rear loading area having a 12mm (0.5in) steel chequerplate overlay over the 70mm (2.8in) hardwood floor.

The winch mounted on the rear of the 6,1m (20ft) gooseneck has been made detachable so that when it is not required the operator, Al Mansmoor Ltd., may carry a 20ft ISO container on the gooseneck.
