SOME OF the E2b shortfall inspending for the current year disclosed in the recent Government expenditure paper could be used to provide a national service for transport, which would be a great improvement on the existing situation, suggested Bob Cryer (Labour, Keighley) last week.
He put forward the idea after Miss Margaret Jackson, Under Secretary for Education, had once again given a "no progress" report to MPs worried about school transport.
The administrative and financial implications of possible alternatives to the present system were still being examined, she said. Unfortunately widespread concern did not express itself in agreed views.
