THE GOVERNMENT is to fund a trial traffic information broadcasting system costing 085,000.
If the trial is successful, it could lead to a £4m national system with 80 transmitters in two years.
Transport Secretary William Rodgers welcomed the trials, being jointly run by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory and the BBC. It will operate in the Home Counties, using five transmitters to give traffic information automatically over car radios. Drivers to take part in the trial have yet to be selected.
It is estimated that a iimilar national scheme could save between £5m and £10m in delays and accidents per year. The benefits to commercial vehicles in time saved in traffic delays could be considerable.
