FOR the first time ever foreign motor vehicles are to be assembled in China.
Harpers International has announced that it is to build an assembly plant at Shumchun, just across the Hong Kong border. Initially the plant will only assemble coaches which will all be exported to Hong Kong and Macao, but lorry and, possibly, car assembly is planned for the future.
Harpers has been assembling Ford R series coaches in Hong Kong, shipped out from the UK for 18 months, but wants to expand its production. It is understood that parts will be shipped from Japan for the new plant which is due to start in Autumn.
