kULIER Norman Lunt has appealed at a public inquiry to be owed to build a garage at his premises in South Street, Thatto ,ath. St Helens Council had refused planning permission for proposed improvements.
Vit. Lunt, 51, said the preses have been owned by his nily for more than 40 years. told the inspector. J. H. adwick, that the building, iich would house three of six tippers, would improve ! general appearance of the !mises, and reduce the noise el in the area. Residents from surrounding streets complained about the noise and dirt from Mr Lunt's six tippers, and many objected to the traffic jams caused by vehicles reversing across the narrow street into the yard.
Herbert Fairclough, for Mr Lunt, said that to refuse planning permission for the building would help neither Mr Lunt nor the residents.
"If the garage, with its soundproofing and workpits is not built, Mr Lunt will just have to carry on as he is Mr Lunt denied allegations that he intended to expand his business once the garage is built.
"At the moment I have men lying on their backs in mud doing maintenance work and all I'm trying to do is improve the conditions for both myself and my employees," he said.
A. C. Davey, for the Council, said they believed Mr Lunt has expansion at the back of his mind — "why else would he make such a costly investment?"
The Council has refused permission on the grounds that the proposed development would result in an intensification of the business.
