Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Royal Society of Arts, John Street, Adelphi, London, W.C.2, has now published in pamphlet form the Howard Lectures, entitled "Diesel Engines," delivered before that body in November and December of last year. The lecturer was Mr. H. R. Ricardo, F.R.S., The cost is 2s. 6d. per copy. It will be remembered that we gave a summary of the matter relative to vehicle type engines in our issues dated December 1st, 8th, and 15th, 1931. The pamphlet forms an interesting collection of the views of one of the foremost experts on internal-combustion engines.

Experimenting With Gas for Buses.

It is recommended by the transport committee of Rotherham Corporation that the municipal transport manager and the gas engineer, together with Dr. Walker, of the Birmingham Research Laboratories, should confer with represeutatives of the Ministry of Transport on the question of operating buses by gas stored in high-pressure cylinders. The gas engineer, in conjunction with the transport manager, proposes to earry out experiments with two buses converted to run on gas, and the necessary expenditure of about £500 has tentatively been authorized.

A New Stewart 2-tonner.

The Stewart Motor Corporation, of Buffalo, New York, which is represented in this country by Morgan Hastings, Ltd., 212, New King's Road, London, S,W.6, announces a new 2-ton chassis, known as model 50X, which sells in America at the low price of 1,195 dollars.

The engine is a six-cylindered unit, with a bore of 31 ins, and a stroke of 41 ins.; it has a rating of 65 b.h.p. The power is taken through a dry-plate clutch, equipped with a vibration damper, to a four-speed-and-reverse gearbox, which forms a 'unit with the engine. The gear ratios are as follow :— Law, 6.4 to 1; second, 3.09 to 1; third, 1.69 to 1; fourth, direct ; reverse, 7.82 to 1.

The rear axle is of the spiral-bevelgear type, with fully floating shafts carried on Timken roller bearings. The standard gear ratio is 6.37 to 1, although an optional ratio of 5.6 to 1 is available.

The chassis in its standard form has a wheelbase of 12 ft. 1 in., although it can be supplied at the same price with an 11-ft. 2-in. wheelbase.

Thornyeroft's "Daring" Chassis.

In the advertisement of John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., appearing in our issue dated February 2nd, the chassis illustrated should have been referred to as a Daring model. This typo is available with a 17-ft. 4-in. wheelbase for carrying 32-35-seater single-deck bodies, and with one of 15 ft. 11 ins, on which 52-56-seater double-deck bodies can be mounted. A Catalogue of British Oil Engines.

Blackstone and Co., Ltd., the wellknown oil-engine manufacturer, of Stamford, has just issued a striking new catalogue dealing with its power units. Whilst it is primarily intended to cover stationary machinery, details are given of the high-speed, vehicle-type engines and the introductory technical chapters are' of vital interest. A separate publication is issued giving full details of vehicle engines.

Big Drop in Irish Tractor Trade.

The imports of tractor parts into the Irish Free State during the II months ended November last attained a value of £90,998, as contrasted with £832,689 in the corresponding period . of 1930. A heavy decline is recorded also in the export of tractors and parts from the Free State. Those of complete machines fell in number from 15,865 to 3,601 and in value from £1,650,377 to 1341,960, and those of tractor parts from £879,789 to £164,331.
