Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WHEN the claim is made that a certain type of tipping gear is used by many of the principal chassis'manufacturers thronghant the world it is obvious that it must possess merits and have given evidence. Of its reliability and durability under all classes of working conditions. In the case of the Wood hydraulictipping gear, which is made in this country by the Hydraulic Hoist Co., Ltd., the claim is supported by the fact that 150,000 hoists of this description are at present In use. This type of gear is very popular in this country both amongst manufacturers and users, and-it has undoubtedly won a place in the forefront amongst those mechanisms whieli are employed to effect the expeditious and effieient discharge of commercial-vehicle loads. Perhaps the simplicity of construction and operation of the Wood tipping gear has more to do with its success than any other feature, for it consists of three vital moving

parts only—ea piston and two pump gears all Operating in oil. _ It is • Claimed to be impossible for either friction .or misuse to prevent the

successful working of the gear. The cylinder,' which, as. the accompanying illustrations show, is mounted midway on the chassis and is the sole container of the oil which. serves as the means for forcing the piston outwards. Theoil is pumped under pressure into One end oi the cylinder,' the suPPly 'being &Men from the other end, on Which there is no pressure ; a completely closed. system is thus obtained.

The cross-head on the end, 'of the piston rod is a nickel-steel forging, and

it carries the steel rollers, which make contact with the substantial curved cams fixed to tile' underside of the body and impart a lifting motion. The rollers are of drop-forged steel with bronze alloy bushings; they are lubricated on the Alemite system. The power for the constant-mesh oil pump hich is Wed to secure the necessary pressure in the cylinder is obtained by a positive drive from the gearbox. The controls for the operation of the gear are all l'ocated in the driver's cab, from which position the body can be raised and lowered. The maximum angle of tip is, of' course, controlled automatically.

One of the salient features peculiar to the Wood tipping gear is that nu part of the mechanism Projects below the chassis frame, a factor which is of extreme importance -when the 'vehicle is compelled to negotiate seft ground before discharging the contents of the body.

The Wood tipping gear has been made in this country for several years, and, as it is becoming more widely known and its efficiency acknowledged, the Hydraulic Hoist Co., Ltd., are rapidly extending the facilities for increasing their output to keep pace with the rapidly growing demand.

This type of tipping gear has been adopted by several prominent manufacturers, amongst them being the Associated, Equipment Co., Ltd., who subjected it to a gruelling trial, during which it performed 1,231 con, secutive tips, without stoinaing, in a period of 820 minutes; we referred to this meritorieus performance at the time the preliminary test was made. Those readers who would like further details. of the gear can secure them frein a small panapillet which the English manufacturers have just issued and which can be obtained from their headquarters at 182, Lord Street, Southport, The London fitting station of the company is at 1-3, Brixton Road, S.W.9.

Four models of the Wood hoist are made, one of these being of the vertical type and intended for particularly heavy duty the price of them varies from £55485..
