• Almost £2,500 in fines and costs were handed out to eight foreign drivers stopped as part of a 24-hour multi-agency vehicle check of 105 vehicles leaving Portsmouth docks last week.
Hampshire Police say three Dutch vehicles and their drivers were fully legal; but 63 UKbased vehicles, 35 French, two Spanish, one Belgian and a Dane pushed the crime count over 51 In addition, one UK vehicle was found to be using an excise licence which had previously been stolen in Liverpool, while a French vehicle was discovered to be running on red diesel.
Officers from the Special Branch freight division, immigration, both divisions of the Vehicle Inspectorate and the Customs & Excise fuel unit were involved in the operation, co-ordinated by Hampshire traffic police. CID and criminal intelligence officers . also look part.
Police say a total of 28 offences relating to a variety of hours,
weight and Construction & Use regulations will be considered for prosecution; 35 others were considered serious enough to caution.
A number of hours discrepancies are likely to receive further attention, they say.
