1-1. A RECENT addition to the fleet of

Hall and Co., Ltd., Croydon, is an articulated unit with a Bedford SA8 as prime Mover, for the transport of lime in bulk.

The 24-ft.-long semi-trailer is based on a Swedish principle and was built at the Slough factory of Inter-Consult (London). Ltd. It is of all-welded construction. incorporating twin spherical containers in the trailer framework.

Discharge of the load is by compressed air supplied by a Wellworthy compressor mounted on the Bedford chassis, and .driven by a power take-oil from the gearbox. A flexible hose connects the air supply to the pipe system on the semi-trailer. with an air inlet and a load outlet at the base of each container. The discharge connection is at the rear end, whilst at the nearside between the containers, close to the air valves, there is an air connection, used

for pneumatic loading of the containers. Time taken for the discharge of the load of 8 tons of lime through a 50-ft. vertical or a 100-ft. horizontal pipeline is said to be 20 minutes.

Mr. J. W. Taylor, transport manager of Hall and Co., told The Commercial Pslotor that the use of the unit, which is operated from their Coulsdon Lime Works, was on an experimental basis, in an effort to overcome difficulties in the transport of lime by conventional methods, due to the tendency of this material to cling to the sides of containers, when part-load deliveries are made. He said also that he intended at a later date to experiment with the unit en bulk cement transport.
