TN an attempt to make their fleet inter.' changeable, Alfred Bell (Newcastle), Ltd., applied at Manchester. last Friday for the normal user of six of their .Burybased vehicles to be changed. . At present these units were operated by Alfred Bell (North Western), Ltd., a subsidiary of Alfred Bell (Newcastle), Ltd.

Mr. T. H. Campbell Wardlaw, for the applicants, said that on January I, 1960, they had taken over the shares of Brewer and Turnbull, Ltd.; and the six vehicles in question had then had a normal. user of: "Furniture, and household effects, electrical supplies, potato crisps, Great Britain, as required." The new conditions requested were: Household furniture and effects and general goods, Great Britain."

The remainder of the Alfred Bell fleet was allowed to carry general goods and they wanted the operations of these units to be developed to correspond.

Mr. H. F. Marks, managing director of Alfred Bell (North Western), Ltd., stated that all the vehicles would be operated from Lowercroft 'Road, Elton, Bury; but the company wanted to make the best economical use of them. Whichever part of the country they travelled to, they would always come back to Bury.

He considered that about one third of the operations had been general goods traffic. He thought that this might increase.

The North Western Licensing Authority, Mr. F. Williamson, said that with the proposed. normal user it was possible to concentrate on general goods to the exclusion of the other commodities. He suggested that one-third of the vehicles' operation should be devoted to general goods and the remaining two-thirds to furniture and household effects, potato crisps and electrical supplies.

This satisfied all the parties concerned and Mr. Marks gave his assurance that in the future the traffic carried would be split in these proportions.
